Get the Story Right: Amplifying Impact of Women Activists and Journalists to Combat GBV

2025

Media Centar Sarajevo, in partnership with The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation and with the support of the Swedish Institute, will implement over the next two years the project “Get the Story Right: Amplifying Impact of Women Activists and Journalists to Combat GBV.”

Gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide remain pressing issues in Bosnia and Herzegovina, often underreported and misrepresented in the media. Harmful stereotypes, sensationalist reporting, and limited access to credible sources hinder journalists, while women’s rights activists frequently lack the tools to effectively engage with media and amplify their advocacy.

This project responds to these challenges by strengthening collaboration between women’s rights activists and female journalists, creating sustainable alliances that foster responsible and gender-sensitive reporting. The initiative aims to shift GBV from being perceived as a private matter to a public issue, generating pressure for institutional accountability and policy change.

Planned activities include:
    • Knowledge-building sessions in Bosnia and Herzegovina to enhance skills and understanding of GBV reporting
    • Collaborative production of media content by activists and journalists
    • Monitoring of media reporting practices, followed by peer advocacy to improve standards
    • Regional experience-sharing exchange in Serbia
    • Best-practice study visit in Sweden, learning from Swedish journalists and activists
    • Publication of project outcomes at the global level
Through these activities, the project will amplify the voices of women change agents, improve the quality of media coverage, and contribute to broader societal awareness and accountability in combating GBV.
