Presented/Digital Majority

2025
The Presented/Digital Majority project is a continuation of the collaboration with Pro Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina in joint efforts to bridge the gap in the underrepresentation of women from the fields of journalism, culture and arts, activism, and politics in the public and digital space in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.

According to Humaniki, of the total number of biographical articles on bs.wikipedia, 77.17% are about men, while approximately 22.7% are dedicated to women. This points to a gender gap that aligns with wider trends observed on Wikipedia.

The free online encyclopedia Wikipedia is frequently used as a starting point for gathering information online, and its articles are consistently ranked high in search engine results. It is also a starting point for many researchers.

In the wider region, violation of Wikipedia principles has been a well-documented issue, with noted abuses for the dissemination of false, revisionist, and propagandistic information. In deeply divided societies, it is vital to improve the credibility and quality of information available to the public.

This project aims to create a community of editors and researchers active on Wikipedia, in accordance with clearly established rules and standards regarding sources, grammar, and the tone for writing and editing articles. This knowledge is then spread to other media - online media, social networks, magazines, and used for advocacy campaigns in public places.

Familiarity and adherence to these standards and processes enable individuals to have equal access to knowledge production while simultaneously enhancing the quality of information available to the wider public. Greater visibility of women, as well as of broader thematic areas related to activism, women’s rights, and transitional justice, is particularly important in this context for fostering positive changes and building a more equal and just society.

The project aims to:
  • Strengthen capacities and develop skills for selected researchers and authors on the topic of correctly writing Wikipedia articles;
  • Writing 20 Wikipedia articles about thematic areas important to women in relation to activism, women's rights, and transitional justice;
  • Increase visibility of important women from Bosnian and Herzegovinian society on the internet
  • Raise awareness of women's presence in the digital world through participation in a panel at the Female Art Rising festival, where discussions will focus on inequality and violence against women in the digital space.
This project is implemented by Foundation Mediacentar in cooperation with Pro Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
